Perspectives on ACM

Not too shabby.

22: Celebration

After I got back from ACM, I went to the Swing Jam down at Pomona. The Pomona Jazz Band was playing live music, and a good time was had by all. They even played a birthday dance for me (Thanks, Lisa!), which I turned into a birthday dance for me and Katie, because otherwise I would have been out on the floor all alone. Which is scary. All the girls lined up to dance with me, and were all very polite, dispite the fact that I ran out of different steps to do around the third or fourth and started trying randomish leads that often ended up with us facing different directions with somewhat confused looks on our faces. But that was ok! I just made it look like that was what I wanted to do (I did, right?) and grabbed the next girl. After the girls, a few guys lined up to dance too, and that was fun. Keith is a really good follow. And, then, because the Pomona Jazz Band just kept playing, the girls lined up again, and that was fun, too, except that I started getting a little tired by that point. Eventually, I think the song ended, and I was lightly dragged off the floor into a chair. Tatsu came over to apologize for the length and speed of the song.

“Water.” I replied.

After the dancing, we went over to the Coop to get milkshakes, and then back up to my place for cupcakes (Thanks Peggy!). We watched a few episodes of Mr. Show, and then my suitemates came in to wish me a happy birthday.

AB came in to the left, blocking my exit. The rest came around the other side.

“Hey, Ian,” said Kevin, “we want to show you something. It’s over near the bathroom.”

I made a break to get past AB, but he held me. Ingrate. And then there was the sound of glass hitting other glass, so I decided to cooperate until we passed the TV and the bar, lest we damage things. And then I made another break for the door, but they caught me.

Showering is an interesting tradition, kind of like a yearly baptismal, except that there’s less symbolism involved. Also, babies generally don’t kick as forcefully.

22: Prologue (By Popular Demand)

Posted in General at 10:24 pm by Ian

I spent most of yesterday at the Southern California Regional ACM Competition. The ACM competition is a speed programming contest, consisting of six problems to be solved in five hours. There are three man teams (technically, three-person, but that appeared to be almost entirely a technical distinction). Mine was me, AB, and Kevin. The team that solves the most problems wins, with ties broken by the total time spent on all solved problems, counting from the beginning of the contest to the submission of a correct solution to the problem.

So it’s important to do the problems in order of difficulty (which is not always easy to determine), and to do the easy ones quickly if you want to win.

Unless, of course, the Caltech super team is competing. These guys were a shoe-in. Last year, the three freshmen won the SC ACM Regional by solving all six problems. And they did it with over an hour to spare. The next highest placed team solved four of six.

So people were competing for second place.

We got 10th out of around 55 teams.

I think we did very well, even though I would have liked to solve one more problem. We did the two easy problems and what ended up being one of the hardest problems, but our approaches on some others were flawed, so we didn’t solve them.

Watching Heathers tomorrow at approximately 9ish, if anyone wants to come.

It’s an awesome movie.

CNN has a story today about the record-breaking 5-day performance of Matrix: Required. It narrowly edged out LOTR: TTT, or at least it may have.

The article (if you don’t care to read it; it’s not that interesting) talks about how conflicting reports of each film’s opening grosses led to bragging rights for the studios switching from Time Warner to New Line.

We are led to believe that this is somehow important socially among such studios, as though New Line and Warner gather ’round the water cooler and berate each other over the $0.2 million that one movie made over the other.

Of course, this is not true. They actually use memos for this type of communication:
To: New Line Cinemas
From: Warner Bros. Pictures
Subject: New Gross Numbers!
Body: Ha ha ha, u sU><><0rs. R movie with N30 pwned those little dwarf things this weekend.

Barry Meyer, CEO
Then the article goes on to point out that everything that they’ve claimed was “news” so far is in fact, not, with the following point:
Overall winner: Time Warner, which owns both studios. (It’s also the parent company of CNN.)
I’d also note that, until recently, this story had higher billing on than, for example, the story about the removal of Alabama’s Chief Justice Roy Moore from the bench over separation of Church and State issues. I see no conflict of interest here.

The Wings Must Just Be For Show

Posted in General at 9:25 pm by Ian

I ordered some more memory for my laptop recently, because I decided that listening to the hard drive grind, desperately swapping pages, every time I wanted to run more than the operating system, was getting on my nerves.

I just got the email that said it shipped, so I went to track it, and found that it probably won’t be here until Friday.

Shipping from City of Industry.

In three days, I could walk there, pick up my memory, and walk back.

I overhear suitemates in Kevin’s room, discussing movies. When I walk in, they have open the IMdb’s list of the top 250 movies, and are talking about Paths of Glory, which we watched for Kubrick.

Kevin: I mean, it’s a good movie, but I don’t know that it’s the 38th best movie ever.
Me: Name 38 better movies, then.
Kevin: The first 37, and Fight Club.
