“…Then We Can Make All Kinds of Crazy Laws…”

Posted in General at 11:52 am by Ian

It seems that President Bush is now posturing for his religious right supporters. I’m pretty sure that this proposed Amendment is dead in the water because, while there may be a majority of people who are uncomfortable with gay marriage, most don’t want to go fucking with the Constitution. After all, it took over 200 years to ratify the last Amendment, and that was just to keep politicians from getting more money!

Plus, an amendment needs 2/3 of the House of Reps, 2/3 of the Senate, and ratification by 2/3 of the states.

I don’t think there’s that much anti-gay marriage sentiment out there. The polls I’ve seen give a majority to the anti-gay marriage people, but by a relatively slim margin. Like, 46% to 42%. That’s no where near 2/3.

PLUS the fact that it is nothing less than plain discrimination, and we haven’t had a very good history with that, constitutionaly.

    3/4ths of the states.

Ah, see there’s your problem: you’re using logic and reason. A true conservative needs not these things.

    3/4? Even better.

Adam: That’s why I don’t make a good conservative. (Not that I see much evidence of logic and reason on the side of the liberals, generally, either… Perhaps I just expect to much from people. Like, you know, sense.)

Yeah, 3/4, except for the original ratification (because they knew they couldn’t get that many, they made it ceil(3/4) – 1) and the 13,14,15th Amendments (in which it was decided that since we needed to get some amending done and some Southerners had put up an awful ruckus, we’d just go ahead and assume that, say, S. Carolina was in favor of equal rights for blacks ).
