That’ll be $3. $2 for the Toll, and another $1 Just Because.

In the driving directions Google just gave me, I have to go several miles on a “Partial toll road.” There is no explanation about what that is. Maybe it means that they only collect a toll sometimes. Or maybe only parts of the road have a toll, and Google doesn’t really know where those parts are.

But I have my own theory.

Or maybe it’s only a partial road.

It’s probably a toll in one direction only. They’re pretty common back east, esp. on bridges crossing the Hudson.

So, I just looked at directions from Santa Rosa to San Francisco, and sure enough, the 49.5 miles of travel on 101 (the 101 for Southern California readers), is flagged as “Partial Toll Road”. That pesky Golden Gate Bridge.

But the reverse trip has no such flag, since that’s the free direction. So “Partial Toll Road” appears to mean there is a toll for part of the distance. And Google has figured out that it’s not a toll road if you are going in the free direction. Which is the kind of detail we have grown to expect from Google.
